Case Scenario 1: Giving Advice on a Windows Defender Setting

You are an IT professional providing frontline support for Margie’s Travel, a small business

that does not have an Active Directory directory service domain but instead uses workstations

configured in a workgroup. The company has recently upgraded the OS on all its computers

to Windows Vista. Company employees are becoming familiar with Windows Defender, and

you are supporting them. Answer the following questions:

1. A colleague has been using Windows Defender and reports that an application that he

uses regularly has been deleted. He has used default settings, except he has specified

that items with a high alert level should be removed. He has forgotten where he got the

useful application. What do you tell him?

2. A colleague is configuring a nightly Windows Defender scan. She is unsure about spec-

ifying the default action to detect high alert items and wants to make sure they cannot

harm her system. At the same time, she does not want to remove them completely in case

Windows Defender deletes items in error. What do you advise?

3. A colleague runs a Windows Defender scan. The scan identifies an application that is not

classified. The user is not sure whether to delete the item or not. What do you advise?

Case Scenario 2: Advising Customers About IE7+ Security Settings

You are an IT professional working for a computer systems retailer. You provide telephone

help desk support to home and small business users as part of an extended warranty contract.

Your employer has recently started selling computers that have Windows Vista installed, and

customers sometimes require assistance with their security settings. Answer the following

questions:

1. A customer has received an e-mail telling him his bank account might have been hacked
