In the following case scenarios, you will apply what you have learned about configuring and

troubleshooting network connectivity. You can find answers to these questions in the

“Answers” section at the end of this book.

Case Scenario 1: Advising Customers About Network Configuration

You are an IT professional working for Northwind Traders. Your company supplies computer

systems on a contract basis. You provide telephone help desk support to small business users

as part of an extended warranty contract. Typically, your customers configure their networks

as workgroups rather than as Active Directory domains. Most of the systems your company

provides run Windows Vista Business or Ultimate. Answer the following questions:

1. A customer runs a very small business from his home. Until recently he used a single

computer connected directly to his cable modem to access the Internet. His business has

expanded and now he uses three computers. He has connected them with an Ethernet

hub and now connects to his modem through a USB cable. He reports that the computer

connected to the modem can access the Internet but the others cannot. What do you

advise?

2. A customer has set up a wireless network in her office. She is pleased with the ease with

which she set up her third-party WAP by clicking a single button in the web interface.

However, she reports that workers in the office next door to her can access and use her

network. What do you advise?

3. A business customer with four employees wants to access information on his own work-

station from other workstations on his office. He has administrator and standard

accounts on all the workstations on his network. He uses file and folder sharing because

he does not want to copy or move a large amount of information into his public folder

structure. He wants his deputy to be able to access the information but not to change it.

What do you advise?
