Chapter 1
Installing Windows Vista Client
For this to happen, you need to stop Windows Vista from automatically
rebooting. Dumping
all memory also allows you to more thoroughly debug what is going on,
although examining
Windows memory dump files is beyond the scope of the 70-620 exam. To
configure the Win-
dows Vista system failure settings, perform the following steps:
1. In the Start menu, click Control Panel. If the Device Manager icon is not
displayed, click
Classic View in the left side taskbar.
2. Double-click System.
3. Under Tasks, click Advanced System Settings. Click Continue to close the
User Account
Control dialog box.
4. Click the Advanced tab, and then click the Settings button in the Startup
And Recovery
section.
5. Clear the Automatically Restart check box.
6. From the Write Debugging Information drop-down list, select Complete
Memory
Dump.
7. Click OK twice to close the Startup And Recovery dialog box and the
System Properties
dialog box.
Lesson Summary
■
The majority of hardware device driver software is installed automatically
during the
installation process.
■
Windows Update Driver Settings determine whether Windows Vista will contact
the
Windows Update website to locate drivers when new hardware is detected.
■
The primary tool used to install, configure, and manage device drivers is
the Device Man-
ager console.
■
To install driver software obtained from the hardware vendor, right-click in
Device Man-
ager, and select update software. From there, specify the location of the
driver files.
■
If a driver causes system instability, edit the driver properties in Device
Manager, and roll
the driver back to a previous version.
■
If a driver cannot be rolled back to a previous version but is still causing
system instabil-
ity, it is possible to uninstall the driver completely by editing the device
properties in
Device Manager.
Lesson Review
You can use the following questions to test your knowledge of the
information in Lesson 3,
“Installing, Updating, and Troubleshooting Windows Vista Device Drivers.”
The questions are
also available on the companion CD if you prefer to review them in
electronic form.
