Configuring Pens and Input Devices

Tablet PC pens interact with the screen through magnetic resonance and not through pres-

sure, which eliminates the chance that touching the screen or applying accidental pressure

with an object that is not the pen will lead to input. The Pen And Input Devices item in Control

Panel allows you to customize how a pen or stylus used with a Tablet PC interacts with the

operating system. The basic options allow you to configure pen taps to mimic mouse clicks. As

Figure 14-7 shows, you can configure specific pen actions to mouse actions. The settings

enable you to configure double-tap speed in a way similar to how you would configure double-

click speed using the Mouse item of the Control Panel. Some pens that come with Tablet PC

computers have a button along the shaft and another at the end. Pressing down on the button

on the shaft alters the small magnetic field around the end of the pen; depressing the one at

the end by pushing it against the screen allows the pen to act as an eraser. The pen button can

be configured so that tapping with the pen while holding down this button performs the same

action as a mouse’s right-click. If the stylus is appropriately configured, you can use it to erase

ink writing input from the pen in a way similar to how you would use an eraser to remove pen-

cil marks from paper.
